Playlist Thursday: Sounds of Summer

It’s Thursday again already! While I’m out getting my run on early in order to avoid the 100 degree temps we’re expecting, I present you with yet another episode of Playlist Thursday.

This time we’re talking Sounds of Summer – after all, yesterday was the first day of summer!

How it works (in case you’re new here, or forgetful LOL)

Three songs, one post:

Something Old: These will be songs that are at least 5 years old. I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.
Something Current: These will be songs that have been released within the past year. I know, but you have to give me some leeway here.
Something to Consider: These will be songs that are not typically heard on the radio and may be by artists you’ve never heard of or considered running to. This is the wild card category, can be old or current.

Yes, this is a remake of the Don Henley song, but it kicks ass. They add enough of a punk influence to modernize it and keep your moving!

And, it’s Summer!

Summer certainly made itself known today. Makes sense since it is the first day of summer and all, but we don’t normally see temps in the 90s here in Rhode Island in June, we typically average mid 70s to 80.

So I threw myself right into heat training with a 4 mile run. Hey, the training schedule speaks to me – I must listen. And I was too lazy after staying up late watching a movie last night to get it in this morning.

Schedule says: 4 miles @ 9:55. My legs said:

First Day of Summer Run

I’m honestly surprised. Last time I ran in hot weather was an 8 miler over Memorial Day weekend and I was miserable.

This speaks volumes to me in terms of hydration – I drank 75 oz. of water and 16 oz. of (full strength) Nuun prior to this run.

It also tells me that my planlessness throughout May (and mostly lack of running – 71 miles in May, with my longest run being Cox Half Marathon) really paid off in the sense that my injuries have healed and my legs feel entirely too fresh.

This was Monday’s run, hence the “entirely too fresh”:

Plus, I have a pretty kick ass pacer – I literally looked at Kevin at about 3.5ish miles and said “Who’s pacing this run anyway?” I was doing my damndest to keep up with him! It was then we decided on a strong finish! And strong it was. The best part is after that I’ve had no residual soreness, no dead legs, no problem doing it again today. I hope I can keep this up throughout my training program!


While we’re on the topic of running, heat, summer, etc… I have a little “first day of summer surprise” for you guys.

The Return of Monday Love

I haven’t done one of these since Labor Day! This is what I’m loving here on this Monday:

Indian Summer

Look at that forecast:

It has been like this since Saturday.  The humidity levels have been reminiscent of Mid-August.  And while all the fall lovers out there are whining and complaining about it, I’m loving every second of it. I love fall too, but nothing beats summer for me.

Planet Fitness

More specifically, the Planet Fitness Black Card Membership.  With this membership I can go to any of the Planet Fitness locations nationwide! I can go to my home club with my parents when they go, I can go to the one 8 miles from my house on weekends, and I can go to the one on my way home from work during the week.  It makes having an excuse to skip the gym really hard – which is good for me, because as much as I love being fit, I HATE the gym.  I’d rather workout at home or run, outside, but I don’t always have that option.  So when I have to – it really helps that Planet Fitness is there for me, conveniently.  There’s even 7 locations here in Rhode Island – that’s a lot for a state that only has 32 towns/cities!

A good old-fashioned sweat fest…

Holy cow – today’s workout was a beast.  Since I’m not running this week, and my foot pain (although it’s not really pain anymore, just minor discomfort) showed itself a few times today, I took to the stationery bike.

Crazy right? I rode 20.40 miles in an hour. I was sweating SO BAD that I had to constantly wipe my forehead to keep it from dripping in my eyes and it looked like I peed myself when I stood up.  Now that is a real workout. I’m glad I got my sweat on like that tonight, made me not miss my usual run so much.

10 Pound Slimdown

I’ve only done two of the videos so far, but I plan on doing the Lower Body and Yoga tomorrow morning (45 minutes total).  My obliques are still sore from the core video the other day.  I’m totally loving it. I can’t wait to implement these more.

Well I’m only doing 4 tonight because I have to go to bed and at least get my 7 hours!
