AMAZING Memorial Day Weekend Recap

29 May

Hey everyone! Sorry for the unexpected 4 day blogging hiatus – I last minute decided to unplug for the weekend, and it was well worth it.

It all started Friday morning when I took my NASM Certified Personal Trainer Exam and I PASSED! Stay tuned for MUCH, MUCH more on that in the very near future.

Then, Friday night  I went out with someone who is going to be an integral part of my life going forward. Someone who I ran 8 miles with last weekend and had an amazing time (followed by an almost as amazing breakfast). Someone who I ran 8 miles with yesterday as well – and took great care of me as I suffered in the heat of the day. Someone who fit right in with my friends on Saturday night as if he’s known them as long as I have.

I know, I know, I’m being vague, but I’m not sure how much I want to divulge right now. Perhaps more later? We shall see.

Speaking of that party – more amazingness. Jess really is the hostess with the mostest, I am not joking. She threw a party for her hubby’s birthday Saturday night and it was a fantastic time. I sure do love these gals (and their boys, and all of their other friends/family that I got to meet!):

Thanks for the pic, Jo!

Things are really falling into place for me right now. I changed positions at my company – I’m still not sure how  I feel about staying there while I build up my fitness career, but this new position is WAY better than my old one. I have to think, trouble shoot, problem solve, and prioritize. All of that without having to answer phones, DOUBLE BONUS!

So, back to that 8 miles yesterday for a minute. OMG. That is all. It is way over average temperatures for this time of year right now – it was 83 during our run yesterday. Mostly in the sun. I am so not used to that!

It got me to thinking though – in the past couple of years it has been HOT in Chicago in October. How am I going to meet my goal if I run early morning’s all the time, not in the heat of the day? So, I decided it’s time to start heat acclimating. I’m going to run after work from now on, and get used to this weather!

Starting tonight…it’s going to be about 80 by the time I head out for my run. I’ve drank 75 oz. of water, 16 oz. of Nuun, and 11 oz. of Coconut Water throughout the day. I’d say I’m hydrated! Wish me luck!

I hope everyone had as amazing of a weekend as I did!

Playlist Thursday

24 May

Friend, fellow FitFluential Ambassador, and all around awesome runner/blogger guy, Pavement Runner, does a series on his blog called “Playlist Thursday". I participated last week by adding my ideas to the comments on his blog, but he told me I should really participate so here goes!

Yes, I stole his logo – I don’t think he minds Winking smile

Here’s how it works (From Mr. Pavement’s post):

Something Old: These will be songs that are at least 5 years old. I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.
Something Current: These will be songs that have been released within the past year. I know, but you have to give me some leeway here.
Something to Consider: These will be songs that are not typically heard on the radio and may be by artists you’ve never heard of or considered running to. This is the wild card category, can be old or current.

I’ve been on a wicked techno/hip-hop/anything extremely upbeat kick lately so I’m using that as a basis for my post:

Something Old:

Artist: Rusted Root

Title: Send Me on My Way

Try staying still when this song is on. I dare ya

Fave quote: “And we will run, we will, we will crawl, we will”

Something Current:

Artist: Flo Rida

Title: Good Feeling

The title really says it all, doesn’t it? Running makes you feel good!

Fave Quote: “Got adrenaline, never giving in, Giving up’s not an option, gotta get it in”

Something to Consider:

Artist: Alter Bridge (I am out to rid the world of people who haven’t heard of Alter Bridge, one person at a time. This band is amazing, by far one of my favorites).

Title: I Know It Hurts

Not only is this song rockin’, but you really think if you’re running a hard race/run that he’s talking to you!

Fave quote: “We all fall sometimes you’re not the first, But I know it hurts,
Yeah I know it hurts”

What’s on your playlist? Do you like the Alter Bridge song? Do I have to force more upon you to turn you into a fan? Winking smile

The Beauty of it All

23 May

Now that my passion for photography has grown by leaps and bounds (and since I discovered how easy it is to edit pictures in Picasa!) I take a million more pictures than I ever did, and I put a lot more thought into them.

With that came the thought – I sure do live in a beautiful place. I’m surrounded by forests, 45 minutes from the beach (if I leave my house early enough to avoid traffic), 2 hours from the mountains. It’s really a helluva place to live. I was also thinking that as I wandered the beach with Lexi on Saturday, so I pulled out my phone and started snapping away (every picture here was taken with my phone).

Gorgeous, right? These were taken at my favorite beach, Narragansett Town Beach. It’s owned by the town and not the state so (in my opinion) it’s more well cared for. You also have to pay to park and to get on the beach – so less tourists flock here than the state beaches. (And if you’re local you know the secrets to not paying – and no, neither of them are cheating the system!).

I also took some pics on a running route that is right out my front door. Even though I live on a main road, it doesn’t take many miles to find the beauty. Some of these were even taken on the main road!

I’m so lucky to live in such a beautiful area. The winters may suck, but I’m pretty sure I’m never leaving.

How do you feel about where you live?

P.S. I’m venturing onto more creative posts, versus the typical “This is what I ran today, this was my workout today.” I figure I’ll just recap those once a week, and channel my creative side more other days, as well as address stuff I want to talk to you about. I really enjoy posts like this, and last night. Whaddya think?!

This is Your Life

22 May

Do what you love, and do it often…

We’ve all seen this, right?

I have this laminated, hanging over my desk where I can see it every day.

While I was running tonight, my brain was cranking away.

Live with purpose.

Live with passion.

Live with enthusiasm.

Live to DREAM.

I was inspired to write this because I see, all too often, people who have clearly lost their lust for life. It makes me sad for these people – to see them, just going through the motions.

But through those people who have lost their lust for life I find inspiration. I find that because I don’t want to be lust-less.

So, I live with purpose. I live to be a daughter, a sister, a niece, a friend, a doggy mama, a personal trainer changing lives.

I live with passion. Passion for running. Passion for helping others. Passion for writing. Passion for food and baking. And many, many more that keep me constantly occupied.

I live with enthusiasm.  I put 100% into everything I do. Half-assed does not exist in my dictionary. I enter into each run, each project, each task at hand with great enthusiasm. If you’re not going to be enthusiastic about what you do – why bother?

I live to DREAM.  Once upon a time someone told me “You can’t run.” That someone has been proven entirely wrong. I dream of running the Boston Marathon (by qualifying), I dream of changing peoples lives through personal training, I dream of being a certified running coach. I dream of being a wife, a mother, a homeowner…

If I didn’t live this way – what would be the point of living?

Stay true to yourself, you’re the only you that you’ve got.

Manic Monday

21 May

I know I know, totally cliché – but totally true. I feel like I’ve been in a whirlwind all day! But we’re not going to let that get us down now are we?

Let’s talk about what I am currently loving on this Monday, shall we?

1) My new training plan. I took a training plan from Runner’s World, and I’m going to follow the basic concept. I’m going to look at some of the Hal Higdon plans – and probably do a combination of the two. Either way, this will be the plan I follow that gets me through the Jamestown Half, the Rock N Roll Providence Half, and Chicago.  I start tomorrow with an easy 4 miler (10ish pace).

2) Beach weather. I took Lexi to the beach on Saturday. Turns out she’s not a fan of the ocean. I don’t think she’s my dog Winking smile I can’t blame her though, the water temps right now are around 59 degrees. Brr. It felt so nice to walk barefoot down the beach though, oh how I love summer!

Lexi No Ocean

3) Simple homemade recipes. Homemade rice pilaf – recipe to follow later in the week/weekend.

Rice Pilaf

4) Passing the NASM Certified Personal Trainer practice exam on the first try. This is a giant confidence booster. Post-practice exam I went through and read up on the stuff I didn’t know well, and even made some flash cards. I have so many flash cards now:

5) My last week of reception duties at my job. I move into the new position next Tuesday. I’m embracing it for now, while I continue to search elsewhere (hello Saucony, I’m looking at you!).

What are YOU loving this Monday? Have anything exciting going on like trainer exams and job transfers? Tell me all about it!

Just Call Me Grace

19 May

Today has started out MUCH better than yesterday did! Let me back up a bit though…

Thursday night I went out for my friend Jen’s birthday. What originally started as dinner turned into dinner and drinks at the pub down the street from her house.

Isn’t she adorable?

The pub we go to is so cool, they have a beer club, and for every tier in the club you reach (they track which beers you drink, and give you a list of what’s left to try) you get prizes! I think it’s going to take me a while to get a prize – especially because they serve pumpkin beer year round and I just can’t resist:

Needless to say I didn’t make it very far into my list because I had to drive, and it was a work night. That didn’t stop us from staying at the bar until 1 a.m. – whoopsy!

So yesterday morning when I got up at 6:30 a.m. I was DEAD. So dead in fact that I slipped and fell down the stairs. That’ll wake you up.

I managed to get up and stumble my way into the kitchen – that was a hard fall, I felt so sick suddenly I had to sit down. It was then I noticed my pinky and was immediately convinced I had broken my finger:

It’s hard to tell from the pic, but the bottom half of my pinky is twice it’s normal size. That, a stiff neck, and a bruised/scraped up elbow seem to be the worst of my injuries. Thanks to my parents for taking care of me by giving me juice for my stomach and ice for my finger!

4 1/2 hours of sleep will do that to ya. Luckily I didn’t hurt any running muscles. I’m a bit stiff this morning, but I’m sure that’ll loosen up once I start moving around.

In other news, you guys know how much I love Saucony, right? I certainly blab on and on about my Kinvara’s enough (not to mention all of their clothing that I own)! Well, I stalk browse their career sight on a weekly basis, hoping and praying they’ll have an opening that I am qualified for.

GUESS WHAT? Yesterday, I found one. Everyone send good vibes, cross your fingers, do a little “new job” dance, or whatever else you may want to do for me. I would do just about anything to work for Saucony. Getting my foot in the door with a position that I am well qualified for would be a fantastic start to a dream come true!

(And, being the complete geek that I am, I tweeted that I had found/applied for this position and the peeps behind Saucony’s twitter account FAVORITED it. Perhaps that is a good sign?)

I realize this is a totally random all over the place post but I have to tell you guys about one more thing:

Larabar Tweet

I’ve also tried the apple turnover one and it is equally amazing.

I gave my mom the Cherry Cobbler one to try and she said it’s deeeeeeeeeliscious!

If you can get your hands on these, do it. They’re fruity, they’re nutty, they’re a perfect snack! Thanks Larabar for sending these my way!

Okay, that’s enough random rambling for a Saturday morning. I’m taking Lexi to the beach today – she’s never been, and it’s going to be a beautiful day!

Have a great Saturday my friends!
